Lillian TrotmanEnlarge ImageLillian Trotman's journey of community involvement began in 2013 when she recognized the hard work being done by Regina Hammond. Inspired by Regina's dedication, Lillian offered a meeting space in the church for Regina as she reorganized the community association. Lillian co-founded a reading program at Johnston Square Elementary School, where she and six others dedicate their time to reading to 1st and 2nd graders once a week. Additionally, she generously donates snacks to the school to support students attendance incentives. As part of the 20-year master plan to rebuild Johnston Square, Lillian played a crucial role in a project to build a tech/computer lab at Mount Sinai Baptist Church. Through her efforts, she successfully secured a $75,000 grant from the city and $25,000 from the Deutsch Foundation and the state. The project, currently 75% complete, aims to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony no later than May 2024. Lillian's measure of success lies in the number and diversity of community partnerships, the educational achievements of local children, and levels of community engagement. Despite facing challenges, such as convincing residents to utilize available services, Lillian remains passionate about working with people and addressing injustices in her community. Her advice to the next generation is to persevere regardless of circumstances, engage with others, and prioritize partnerships, as collective efforts are vital for progress. Lillian Trottman's dedication to her community serves as an inspiration and a driving force for positive change. |
